Well all I can say is that the train journey must have really taken it out of us as we did not surface until 09:30 this morning but as there are no coffee or tea making facilities in our room we were out on the streets pretty sharpish in search of breakfast and a coffee. Now today was never going to be Mr. Trevor Blofeld's favourite day as today we were going shopping! As Macy's is just around the corner that was our first stop of the day picking up or 10% off everything voucher at the visitor centre before continuing on what was meant to be a rampage around the store. The honest answer is that we left the store without buying a thing. Not because we didn't see anything that we liked, we just did not see anything that we needed. |

As Mr. Blofeld recovered from the shock of our lack of purchases we headed up 5th Avenue to the one place he knew that would part us with some of our bank balance, the Abercrombie & Fitch Store. Now the one good thing about visiting this store this time around in New York is that there was no queue at the door and we got straight in to the store that thinks it wants to be a nightclub, all loud music and poor lighting and a staircase that looks like a glass dance floor. We visited all four floors of this mecca of american preppy fashion and left........again without buying a thing! Next stop was one for Mr. B.....the Apple store. Now Trevor has been looking at Macbook Air Laptops in every Apple store that we have seen on the whole of this trip and so far has refused himself permission to buy one.....today it was the same again he walked away empty handed. This is a regular habit of Trevor's, he will look at something for a few months saying how he does not really need it and thats he cant justify the expense and then suddenly it will turn up via Amazon or the Apple store in Ireland, it always seems to happen that way. So we continued on our shop day taking us to Crate and Barrel the home furnishings store, Pottery Barn and CB2 (all home stores). The thing that slightly depressed Jonathan and made him realise just how old he has got is that he always used to be a CB2 fan (all modern and sleek and a bit retro) but now that middle age has set it he has to admit that it was pottery barn all the way, especially the cow hide lampshades!(shame we cant get them home). We had a quick walk through Bloomingdales (uninspired) that started the walk back to Times Square and the half price theatre ticket booth. On route we stopped at a traditional New York Deli for delicious sandwiches and then queued for the best part of an hour for the booth to open. Once it did open the queue actually moved quite quickly and by 15:30 the job was done. From the selection that was available we had wanted tickets to see Pippin but they were all restricted view so we opted for Phantom of the Opera, a show we both love. So now it was back to the shopping or looking at shops because that is all we had done so far so we carried on down fifth avenue until we reached the flat iron district. Well the news is by the time it got to returning back to the hotel we had picked up three things, one pair of trainers and two ipad cases. Now if we had owned a house here I think that we could have bought everything in Restoration Hardware especially a desk unit that was built in a huge leather trunk and an aluminum coffee table and a huge chesterfield leather sofa...the list could easily go on! Back at the hotel we had a quick break, showered and hit the streets again. With neither of us feeling hungry we stopped across the road form the hotel and just had a slice of Pizza each, that was enough. With it being so hot and humid here it just seems to have evaporated our appetites. Phantom was and is as fantastic as ever. It's one of those shows that just seems to have it all and we both fell in love with it all over again. The guy who played the Phantom was particularly good and actually sounded a lot like Michael Crawford in his diction and just the way he sang it. The theatre was packed so they must have certainly sold all the tickets that they must have had down at the half price booth. Phantom may not have been our first choice for a show here in NYC but it was still a good choice and as we got back to the hotel at just after 2300 we carried on listening to its music on the ipad.....what a way to end a great day! |
