Day 21 - Singapore
Day 21 - Singapore
Singapore slings, Mojito’s and Pina Colada’s - HIc !
So after a sleepless night with Trevor not feeling good we headed down for breakfast at about 1000, just in time before it closes.
Having been to Singapore before we were both determined to do things that we did not do last time so our first stop was a walk down beside the Singapore River.
We passed through Robertson Quay, Clarke Quay finally making it down to Marina Bay for a photo opportunity in front of the Merlion the national symbol of Singapore (it’s a cross between a lion and a fish!).
Next stop was the Singapore Flyer, Singapore’s version of The London Eye. This was a great 30 min trip giving spectacular views across the Singapore Straits to

Indonesia and Malaysia. It also made you realise just how tall all the buildings in Singapore are becoming and the amount of building work that is still going on here. Singapore is a tiny island in relation to it’s wealth and land is incredibly expensive, the only way is up!
Leaving the flyer behind us we headed up Raffles Boulevard and caught the MRT (The Underground) to Orchard. The Mrt is quite amazing for an underground system. Firstly the stations are absolutely gleaming! they are full of art and spacious and you can get a full mobile signal whilst you are underground, are you listening Boris!
Getting off on Orchard Road we walked up to The Botanical Gardens. The gardens are stunning and a great escape from the high rise Singapore all around them. Jonathan kept thinking about Janee (his sister) who had played here as a little girl having lived in Singapore with our mum and dad, I hope she recognises something from the photo’s!
We walked back down Orchard Road, the Oxford Street/Regent Street of Singapore. The architecture in Singapore can be fantastic and even the malls are works of art. They use the latest technologies for showing videos on glass of the exteriors of buildings, in one mall we had a digital fish tank on the ceiling, all crazy but amazing stuff!
By now the weather was taking a turn for the worse and it looked like we were in for a tropical storm. We were walking down towards the famous Raffles Hotel and just made it inside before the heavens opened!
Now neither of us had eaten anything since our meagre breakfast of toast so cocktails on an empty stomach??? well you can’t come to Singapore and not have a sling can you?
We set up camp at the bar of the famous Long Bar (part of the Raffles Hotel) and Pina Colada’s. Mojito’s, Singapore Sling’s, well they were all made very well but did not last very long!
Knowing that it was time to leave before it all got very messy we headed out on to the still raining streets. After a quick detour around a mall that only sold electronics, that had crazy Singaporean’s dancing on the ground floor. It was some kind of keep fit dance class, Sherryn would not have been impressed in the slightest!
Food, we needed food so we headed back towards the hotel and stopped off at a chinese restaurant. We ordered chef special starters that consisted of three types of squid, hot and sour soup followed by a seafood curry that actually tasted very thai as it was very fragrant. It was yummy though and just what we needed.
That was our day here in Singapore and I have to say it’s been a great day, roll on tomorrow!
