New Delhi is the capital city of India. Situated within the metropolis of Delhi, New Delhi was planned by Edwin Lutyens, a leading 20th century British architect. It is the seat of the Government of India and the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, making it the powerhouse of Indian politics. New Delhi is home to numerous national institutions and landmarks.


New Delhi is now spoken of as Lutyen's Delhi - much of which remains as it was laid out, with gracious tree-lined roads supporting a large and varied bird population, including bulbuls, parakeets, mynahs, doves, and hornbills - and the rest of the city, which is much more densely built and crowded. Traffic congestion - especially when major building projects such as the Metro are underway - and some of the worst pollution in the world are major issues, as is crime
